Invitation

We would like to inform all our participants that EUROCK 2016 Symposium will be handled as planned between 29 and 31 August 2016 in Cappadocia (Turkey). Major preparations are readily made and the organization is almost complete. The proceedings have already been printed and the venue is ready for organization. The final symposium program contains eight keynote lectures, the 2016 ISRM Franklin Lecture, the 2016 ISRM Rocha Medal Lecture, and presentations of 204 papers which were reviewed by the members of the International Scientific and Advisory Committees, who paid prime attention to their eligibility for publication in the Symposium Proceedings and presentation in the Symposium.

In light of the declarations by Turkish government, the security measures throughout Turkey have been raised to the highest level following recent unfortunate events throughout the world and particularly in our country. In addition to that, a 3 months State of Emergency has been declared. We have been informed that as examples seen in many countries that this state will neither effect “the freedom of travel” nor “limit our daily routine”.

In the spirit of traditional Turkish hospitality, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Turkey, a bridge between Europe and Asia, and hope that your stay here will be intellectually and professionally stimulating and rewarding.

We look forward to meeting you in Cappadocia very soon.

On behalf of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), Turkish National Society for Rock Mechanics cordially invites the international community to attend the 2016 ISRM International Symposium “EUROCK 2016. The symposium will be held between 29 and 31 August 2016 in Cappadocia (Turkey) which is one of the seven sites included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO and also a natural and historical rock engineering laboratory.

We are honoured and pleased that the Turkish community of rock mechanics has been given the opportunity to host for the first time a EUROCK symposium. It is also a pleasant occasion that EUROCK2016 coincides with the semi-centennial anniversary of the First ISRM International Congress on Rock Mechanics which was held in September 1966, in Lisbon, Portugal.

The theme of the symposium is “Rock Mechanics & Rock Engineering: From the Past to the Future”. The symposium intends to cover all aspects of rock mechanics and rock engineering from theories to engineering practices, emphasizing the future direction of rock engineering technologies. The symposium program contains eight keynote lectures, the 2016 ISRM Franklin Lecture, the 2016 ISRM Rocha Medal Lecture, and 204 papers which were reviewed by the members of the International Scientific and Advisory Committees, who paid prime attention to their eligibility for publication in the Symposium Proceedings and presentation in the Symposium.

This event will be an excellent opportunity to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences in various areas of the rock mechanics and rock engineering, as well as to visit many historical sites including old and modern rock structures caved in the soft tuffs of Cappadocia. The venue of the symposium, Ürgüp-Nevşehir, is located in the heart of the Cappadocia Region with convenient access to restaurants, hotels, historical sites and national museums. We believe that you will also enjoy participating to post-symposium excursions in the Cappadocia Region and İstanbul on September 1-2 and September 3- 4, respectively.

In the spirit of traditional Turkish hospitality, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Turkey, a bridge between Europe and Asia, and hope that your stay here will be intellectually and professionally stimulating and rewarding.

We look forward to meeting you in Cappadocia in August 2016.

Prof. Reşat ULUSAY
